Foal Rugs for the Season
The general census is that if you have a foal and leave it without a rug on for its first winter it should be hardy enough to cope through any winter after that. I personally believe this is an old school train of thought and although I believe you shouldn’t over rug or change horses natural life style too much I do believe foal rugs can be a great help. Foals are still young and if you have one born in late autumn you’re expecting it to cope with a lot of harsh weather early in its life. Foal rugs don’t have to be heavy but if it can stop the rain soaking into its coat it will prevent the horse from getting cold. Horses can cope with cold temperature when it isn’t wet but as soon as they get wet they can’t cope with bad weather so foal rugs can come in really handy.
Along with this I think foal fly rugs are good too. You don’t know whether your new addition to the family will be bothered by the flies. Like humans some horses always seem to be effected far more than others by the flies. Foal fly rugs can also be good if your little one suffers from pollen irritations as foal fly rugs can prevent the pollen making contact with the skin.
