I spent last summer in Greece. I lived in Sparta, but at the end of my trip we decided to stay in Athens for a few days instead of waking up at a crazy hour in the morning to drive three hours to Athens from Sparta. We went to the acropolis and the mall! I was so sad that we only had two days there, because it was beautifull!

Μπουασονά Φρέντ — Frederic Boissonnas (1858-1946)
O Φιλέλληνας Ελβετός Fred Boissonnas είναι ο πρώτος ξένος φωτογράφος που περιηγήθηκε τόσο πολύ στον ελληνικό χώρο, από το 1903 και για περίπου τρεις δεκαετίες αργότερα. Ταξίδεψε από την Πελοπόννησο ως την Κρήτη και τον Όλυμπο και από την Ιθάκη ως το Άγιο Όρος. Περιηγήθηκε, φωτογράφισε, έγραψε. Το έργο του, πρωτοποριακό αλλά και καθοριστικό για την εξέλιξη της ελληνικής φωτογραφίας κατά τον 20ό αιώνα. Μέσα από τις φωτογραφίες και τα λευκώματά του παρουσιάζει ένα πανόραμα της Ελλάδας του μεσοπολέμου, συμβάλλοντας στη διαμόρφωση της ευρωπαϊκής κοινής γνώμης για την Ελλάδα την ίδια περίοδο.
Η οικογένεια των Boissonnas κατάγεται από τη νότια Γαλλία, από το Livron, ένα χωριό κοντά στη Μασσαλία. Όταν στη Γαλλία το κλίμα για τους προτεστάντες έγινε εχθρικό οι πρόγονοι του Fred — μαζί με πολλές άλλες οικογένειες- αναγκάστηκαν να καταφύγουν στη Γενεύη. Η καταγωγή της οικογένειας έκανε τον Fred να πιστεύει πως ήταν απόγονος γενναίων Ελλήνων θαλασσοπόρων που είχαν εγκατασταθεί εκεί, κοντά στις εκβολές του Ροδανού.(Gad Borel, ΕΙΚΟΝΕΣ ΤΗΣ ΕΛΛΑΔΑΣ, BOISSONNAS, Ριζάρειο Ίδρυμα Αθήνα 2001 σ. 18.)
