Yale – Macedon and the Greek city states (in 13 minutes)

admin on Jan-19-2012

Abridged version from YALE University course: Introduction to Ancient Greek History (CLCV 205)

Many on the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and its diaspora, are trying to dis-associate the ancient Macedonians from the Greeks, with references to pseudo historians and revisionists who act on behalf of FYROM’s propaganda identity forming circles.

Here is a short version from a world leading university, about the Macedonians and their rise to power in the Greek world.
I have cut it down to 14 minutes, to transform it to a short introduction on Macedonia and Greece.
Please feel free to see the entire lecture from the link bellow, or even follow the entire course on the introduction to ancient Greek history, if you so wish to acquire a deeper understanding of it.

The Fall of the Greek Polis (Conclusion)
In this lecture, Professor Kagan tells the story of the rise of Philip and describes his early actions: unifying Macedon, defeating barbarian armies, and creating a new, professional, national army. According to Professor Kagan, through these actions, Philip was able to make inroads into the Greek world. What made these inroads more effective was Philip’s uncanny talent for diplomacy and the fighting between the various poleis. Eventually, the Greeks under the efforts of Athens and Demosthenes decided to face Philip in the battle of Chaeronea. The battle, though close, was won by Philip and his Macedonian forces. Finally, Professor Kagan evaluates the actions of Demosthenes and concludes that his actions should be judged as a noble endeavor of one who loved freedom.

Greek History – Macedonia & Philip II

admin on Nov-22-2011

Macedonia (/ˌmæsɨˈdoʊniə/ ( listen); Greek: Μακεδονία, Makedonía, [maceðoˈnia]) is a geographical and historical region of Greece in Southern Europe. Macedonia is the largest and second most populous Greek region. The region and that of Thrace (and sometimes Epirus and Thessaly) are often together referred to informally as Northern Greece.

It incorporates most of the territories of ancient Macedon, a kingdom ruled by the Argeads whose most celebrated members were Alexander the Great and his father Philip II. The name Macedonia was later applied to identify various administrative areas in the Roman and Byzantine Empires with widely differing borders. Under the Ottomans, the name disappeared altogether.

The Ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia

admin on Nov-14-2011

The Greek kingdom of Macedonia!
In 336 B.C., Alexander the Great became the leader of the Greek kingdom of Macedonia. By the time he died 13 years later, Alexander had built an empire that stretched from Greece all the way to India. That brief but thorough empire-building campaign changed the world: It spread Greek ideas and culture from the Eastern Mediterranean to Asia. Historians call this era the “Hellenistic period.” (The word “Hellenistic” comes from the word Hellazein, which means “to speak Greek or identify with the Greeks.”) It lasted from the death of Alexander in 323 B.C. until 31 B.C., when Roman troops conquered the last of the territories that the Macedonian king had once ruled.

FYROMian National Basketball Team Players Chanting Fascist and Expansionist Song – 2011

admin on Sep-27-2011

The players of the national basketball team of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia are singing a racist tune, mentioning Goce’s [ Delčev ]* race (!), joined by verses calling for expansion to the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki**.

* Goce Delčev was a nationalist leader of the late 19th-early 20th century whose vision was a Bulgarian occupation of Macedonia, historic and current Greek region roughly equivalent to northern Greece and thus unrelated culturally, ethnically or in any other meaningful way with the Serbo-Bulgarians of FYROM.

**Thessaloniki is old city in northern Greece, the name of which is derived from the name of Alexander the Great’s half-sister, meaning in Greek “victory over Thessalians”.

Distant Thunderstorms & Thessaloniki Seaside Time Lapse

admin on Aug-26-2011

25.07.2011 Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece
After some hot days, the atmosphere finally got unstable and produced some fine Cumulus and Cumulonimbus clouds in the area of central and east Macedonia. Unfortunately, no thunderstorm affected the city of Thessaloniki since all of them were formed North/Northwest of there and were moving with a Northeast direction.
I must have forgot to set the custom White Balance on, so that must be the reason of the flickering on the video… :/ Also, I need to buy a new and better tripod to avoid all the “up and down”-movements… However, I was very satisfied with my first time lapse video of people at the seaside of Thessaloniki (Paralia). If you have any tips for how to make better time lapse videos, please comment :)
