Do you know there is a island called Lesbos?

We were doing monolouges in my class from Spoon River and this girl just picked this monolouge that said Lesbians and Midgets and she thought it was funny.And kept making fun of it. =/

Well my theatre teacher looked up the word Lesbian, and found that there is an island in Greece. AND that is what they were refering to in the monolouge. She made the girl write an essay.

Sapphos was the one who made the term Lesbian mean sexual desire for women.

I thought that was common knowledge. Beautiful island, from the pictures I’ve seen anyway. I used to have a two foot statue of Sappho that I got at an antiques shop. I gave it to a lesbian couple who were close friends of mine.

    Some residents of Lesbos sued in Greece a while back to try and stop lgbt organizations there from using the word "lesbian". They said they were embarrassed when people asked where they were from and they told people they were Lesbians. Heh. They lost fortunately.

    The people on that island currently have a lawsuit going in Greece, they want an injunction to make homosexual women stop calling themselves Lesbians since in that part of the world the term refers to natives of their island. They’ve been Lesbians, that is Natives of the Island of Lesbos, for nearly 3,000 years, they see no reason why the English and Americans can’t respect that.
