“Thessaloniki gave us a wonderful opportunity to sample some great Greek cuisine. We had dinner one night at Molyvos, an upscale eatery popular among the up-and-comers of this glitzy city. (Yes, we were underdressed.) The meal consisted of medzes (like Spanish tapas) with palate-cleansing splashes of ouzo between bites. Our menus paid apt, if grossly awkward, tribute to this anise-flavoured drink with the following:

“The solemnity of ouzo is connected to satiety of hunger, as much as having sex with the child bearing.”

Hmm… okay, well, let’s have another. This delicious spirit punctuated tastes of:

Delightful dolmades – marinated grape leaves stuffed with herbed rice;
Juicy fried mushrooms with basil and white wine;
Mouthwatering keftedes – meatballs with minced lamb, spices, and onions;
Scrumptious smoked swordfish;
Wonderfully salty marinated olives;
Tender kalamari;
and a simple, fresh Greek salad chock full of tomatoes and cucumbers.

Of course, in Greece, where over 40% of the population smokes, there is no such thing as a non-smoking section. Our beautiful meal was slightly marred by the haze in the room. A few times that evening we actually saw a waiter bussing ashtrays. That’s right. If you had managed to fill up your ashtray with cigarette butts during the course of your meal, you wouldn’t have to sit and look at them; rest assured that a fresh, empty tray would be provided for you to fill up again.”
