Thebes was one of the main cities of ancient Greece. Its mythological base goes back to the story of Oedipus, one of the major myth cycles of Greek literature. Thebes was the center of the Boetian Confederacy. You can find some basic information about Thebes here: http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/history/A0848374.html
Some famous Thebans in the ancient Greek world were:
Pindar, the Olympic poet – Alexander the Great, spared his house when he destroyed Thebes in 336 B.C.

  2. titania Said,

It’s very strange: My mother has born in Thebes, Boeotia,Greece (I don’t mean in Ancient Thebes, but in the modern city which is situating in the same area!).

Boeotia or Beotia (Greek Βοιωτια) was the central area of ancient Greece. It is also a prefecture of modern Greece. The name Boeotia possibly derives from the Greek words "Vous" (bull) and "Hota" (ears), so it means "the ears of the bull".
The main and most important city during history in Boeotia was Thebes of which it is said it was related to the Egyptian Thebes. Thebes was the birthplace of the legendary hero Hercules. Ancient Thebes was destroyed totally by Alexander the Great. Thebes were situated in seven hill so they called also "Eptalofos Thebes".
The story of that town is great. I need pages to write it so see the links you will find what ever you search.
    Good luck.
