Yale – Macedon and the Greek city states (in 13 minutes)
Abridged version from YALE University course: Introduction to Ancient Greek History (CLCV 205)
Many on the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and its diaspora, are trying to dis-associate the ancient Macedonians from the Greeks, with references to pseudo historians and revisionists who act on behalf of FYROM’s propaganda identity forming circles.
Here is a short version from a world leading university, about the Macedonians and their rise to power in the Greek world.
I have cut it down to 14 minutes, to transform it to a short introduction on Macedonia and Greece.
Please feel free to see the entire lecture from the link bellow, or even follow the entire course on the introduction to ancient Greek history, if you so wish to acquire a deeper understanding of it.
The Fall of the Greek Polis (Conclusion)
In this lecture, Professor Kagan tells the story of the rise of Philip and describes his early actions: unifying Macedon, defeating barbarian armies, and creating a new, professional, national army. According to Professor Kagan, through these actions, Philip was able to make inroads into the Greek world. What made these inroads more effective was Philip’s uncanny talent for diplomacy and the fighting between the various poleis. Eventually, the Greeks under the efforts of Athens and Demosthenes decided to face Philip in the battle of Chaeronea. The battle, though close, was won by Philip and his Macedonian forces. Finally, Professor Kagan evaluates the actions of Demosthenes and concludes that his actions should be judged as a noble endeavor of one who loved freedom.

Ancient Greeks …
Ancient Greeks stereotyped and called all non-Greeks barbarians. These included the Persians, Thracians, Illyrians, Macedonians, etc. The modern Greeks however, claims that Philip was Greek, and that Demosthenes called him “not only no Greek, nor related to the Greeks” and “barbarian”,it is very clear from Demosthenes’s words that he regards the Macedonians and their king Philip II as non-Greeks. This modern Greek position is easily debunked, however, when we consider the following two points:
a) If the …
a) If the Macedonians were Greeks but still called barbarians and are related to the Greeks, why is there no other Greek tribe called barbarians ? Yet no Spartan, Athenian, Theban, Epirote, was ever called non-Greek or barbarian during any of these political and war conflicts! Not ONCE!
b) ancient Greeks …
b) ancient Greeks also called the Persians barbarians. Are we suppose to say now, based on the modern Greek “logic”, that the Persians were also a Greek tribe ?
Ancient Greeks called all non-Greeks barbarians, and the modern Greek argument can simply not be true, and is quite frankly ridiculous. It does however, prove that modern Greek writers would go to make the Macedonians forcefully Greek, steel the Macedonian history, and even rewrite the feelings of thier ancient Greek ancesters.
