If you are not a Christian Orthodox, can you still get married with a Greek wedding?
admin on Jun-9-2011
In an orthodox church in Greece? My boyfriend is not very religious and he doesn’t know for sure.
First of all one has to be a Greek Orthodox (or Christian Orthodox in general). The other one has to be (if not an Orthodox too) Catholic or a Protestant. At least this is how it works here in Greece. But again it depends on the priest or the place you will choose to get married. Some priests may not allow you to get married if you are not both Orthodox. But as far as I know most of priests won’t have a problem with that. If you choose to get married in a Greek Orthodox church and you are not Orthodox you will have to sign some papers which oblige you to baptize your children from this marriage Orthodox.
Hope this helped you.
one of the two has to be christian orthodox, if not what’s the sense??? And you cannot do it in a greek orthodox church with another’s religion priest, there has to be present a greek orthodox priest

I am not exactly sure but I believe it depends. Has he been baptized as a christian in general? If yes, then I believe you guys can marry in Greece with an orthodox wedding. If not, then no. Being baptized a christian is a must to get married in a church here.
PS: Maybe this site has some useful info for you http://www.greecetravel.com/weddings/
PPS: I wish you two the best (:

My dad is a Greek Orthodox priest
Not a problem, provided one of you is Greek Orthodox.
So I assume that your bfrend is Orthodox and you are not. Practicing or not is not an issue but it will be preferable that you are Cristian, if not, pretend that you are (wear a cross or something and learn how to make the sigh of the cross) and say that you are from an obscure American sect, noone will bother.
Priests have some liberty on that area so you’ll have to start looking around to find a priest that will marry you, usually a young one, and even better in a village.
And that’s it. Once you find one that will do it, do so ASAP and that’s that. (BTW, making a donation will help a lot)

An Orthodox Christian can marry another Christian (who has been baptized) in the Greek Orthodox Church. No problem. The Church will not marry an Orthodox with a non-Christian.
