Greece: Paros or Naxos?

admin on May-16-2011

My family (mother, father, 2 daughters; 15 & 12) is planning a trip to Greece this summer. We are trying to decide which island to go to, Paros or Naxos? We want to try water activities such as kite-surfing (all beginners) explore a little, and just relax on the beaches as we will have just come back from a long tour of Greece.

We are looking for beautiful beaches, mostly. High quality four star hotels with traditional Greece architecture. Good food, nice town.

Please list the pros and cons for both islands, so that we know what to compare.

Have any of you have travelled to Paros or Naxos please lend me your thoughts. Thanks! I really appreciate it! Happy travelling!
Things that are very important to us are close beaches, nice towns with shops, and exploration of greek culture.
The MOST IMPORTANT THING TO US IS…. A BEAUTIFUL BEACH TO WALK ON AND RELAX.

For the Kite surfing Paros is the island where annual competitions take place.
Also the island is more picturesque and traditional. Try Naoussa on the North of the island too.

BTW. A celebrated Parianos is Yiannis Parios.Singer of love songs. I’m sure you will love him. Try for him on U-tube.

Can someone help me plan a wonderful holiday in Greece?

admin on Mar-2-2011

My husband an I are in our late sixties, have spent several months in Athens, have had holidays in Crete, Santorini and Naxos, and have seen most of the major tourist sites in those places. We have an intermediate knowledge of the language (we can read To Vima with a dictionary and make ourselves understood in most situations). We have three or four weeks this summer and would like a holiday that will offer relaxation, a chance to improve our language skills and perhaps see things that ordinary tourists don’t see (though having missed the only boat to Delos on a weekend visit to Mykonos in November, we’d probably like to do it this trip, but with as little time in Mykonos as possible). Catching some of the summer theatre/music festivals wouldn’t go amiss either. Our budget is not horribly restricted, but not five star either. Any suggestions?

Was going to make some suggestions when reading your posting, but Airpole is the "Kiddie" cant beat that advise hes given you, except try ANDROS.

Can anyone tell me about Naxos, Greece?

admin on Jan-29-2011

So I was just wondering if anyone could give me some general information about the island. I have the oppurtunity to study there this summer and I was wondering if someone could tell me about the island itself (climate, physical feature), the people, the food and culture, what there is to do and see…basically anything that you can. Thank you so much!

My husband and I spend four delightful days in Naxos in 2009. If you’re studying you probably won’t be staying in a hotel, but if you do need one, the Hotel Grotta is excellent and reasonably priced. We didn’t have a car, and found the central town where the ferries came in had more than enough to do to keep us happy for four days, though we did take a bus tour for one day to see a bit more of the island. The views from the mountains in the center of the island were superb as were the towns in the hills. All summer there is a music festival at the old Kastro, with both traditional and contemporary music and dancing — and with terrific views of the town and the sea – and free samples of Kitron Naxou, the local challenger to Raki our Ouzo — I like it better than the latter, because it tastes of lemon, not licorice — do try it if you’re there. The warren of streets, full of shops and restaurants that surrounds the Kastro is definitely worth wandering through. The food that we had (apart from the breakfast at the hotel, which was one of the best we’ve had) was the standard food one gets at tavernas throughout Greece, well cooked and served by pleasant people. No doubt there are places where one can get something more locally specific, but we only had four days and didn’t find it — but we’re not complaining, we liked what we had. We loved the public beach in Naxos — clean, sandy, and there are tavernas all along it that will happily let you use them as a base for swimming for the price of a beer (probably even for the price of a coke, but we felt like a beer). You can get day trips from Naxos to other islands in the Cyclades, including a "day trip within a day trip" from Mikonos to the ruins at Delos — what we liked best about Naxos was that although it has much to offer tourists, it is large enough to be a "real place" beyond the tourist industry, and we could see normal daily life going on around us. There is also a fantastic international book store by the harbor. And several places serving terrific ice cream. If I had the chance of studying in Naxos for the summer, I’d grab it.

How can people say that Pagan religions truly died out when people named saints after the Gods?

admin on Dec-4-2010

In Ireland, St. Brigid is credited with miracles that parallel the stories told about the Celtic Goddess by the same name. This was not unique to the Celts however as the same thing happened in Greece (one of the earliest areas to become "Christianized")

"St. Dionysius is obviously based on the notion of Dionysos. Lawson says of him, “The disguise of the ancient god is thin indeed. His name is changed by an iota, but his character not a jot.” Both are associated with Naxos, the vine, wine, and drunkenness. Even a street in Athens that runs beside the theater of Dionysos is now called Street of St. Dionysius.18 There is a myth of St. Dionysius which Lawson includes in his book which is the perfect illustration of the complete way in which the saint assumed the character of the deity."
“Once upon a time S. Dionysius was on his way to Naxos: and as he went he espied a small plant which excited his wonder. He dug it up, and because the sun was hot sought wherewith to shelter it. As he looked about, he saw the bone of a bird’s leg, and in this be put the plant to keep it safe. To his surprise the plant began to grow, and he sought again a larger covering for it. This time he found the leg-bone of a lion, and as he could not detach the plant from the bird’s leg, he put both together in that of the lion. Yet again it grew and this time he found the leg-bone of an ass and put plant and all into that. And so he came to Naxos. And when he came to plant the vine— for the plant was in fact the first vine— he could not sever it from the bones that sheltered it, but planted them all together. Then the vine grew and bore grapes and men made wine and drank thereof.
And first when they drank they sang like birds, and when the drank more they grew strong as lions, and afterwards foolish as asses.”
If these Saints were actually the Gods in disguise, then how can it truly be said that the Pagan religons ever really died out?

pagan religions didn’t die out in the first place, they were either absorbed or driven to the fringes of society.

Initially a lot of pagan kings introduced to Christianity simply incorporated Jesus into their extant pantheon instead of converting outright. You also have to remember that an offical conversion does not equal a total conversion. Part of the appeal of Christianity to pagan monarchs was that in Christianity a failure of leadership does not mean you’re gonna get your throat cut in a pete bog, but for joe public it made almost no difference to them. Plenty of Christian monarchs had to outlaw some pagan practices centuries after the official conversion of their kingdoms because it was still going on.

There are also some groups who claim an unbroken hereditory line of practice going back before Christianity reached Europe, although personally I find this unlikely and difficult if not impossible to prove.

Greek Island Vacation?

admin on Nov-27-2010

I’m planning a trip to Greece this summer with my boyfriend. I will definitely be going to Mykonos and Santorini but I was wondering..If I had time for a third island should I go to Naxos or Rhodes? And how would I get from island to island? I’m interested in going to the beach alot, and going to nice restaurants. I’m not that interested in a crazy nightlife.

If you’re not that interested in nightlife, then maybe you shouldn’t go to Mikonos.
Apart from that, I’d reccomend Rhodes, a nice island with a history to where many Greeks themselves travel.
I’d also reccomend Crete – big, a wonderful coastline and plenty of interesting things to do/see.
