Traveling Greece advise?

admin on Dec-28-2011

so im planning on spending september traveling Greece. FEW QUESTIONS,
what are your favourite places? ive been researcing and found the following places if really enjoy going too which are athens, crete, sanatorini, lesbos, zante, corfu. any feedback about these places? anything i should know bout them?
okay so im just wondering.. how to i get to these islands… is there boats that take you to them or what? and is there places to stay in these places/islands like hotels, hostels, campgrounds.
ANY ADVICE FOR TRAVELING GREECE, please let me know :)
thanks!!!!

Each and every island has its own beauty and places of interest to see. It is therefore a matter of choice, time and financial means to enjoy the most according to your final decision.

Crete, being the largest of the Greek islands has a lot to offer from east to west and north to south. It is an incredible island that will take a few days to really take in all its beauties and certainly needs a transportation means to do so. That can also apply to Lesbos but in shorter time.

Santorini on the other hand, is an island that a full 2 day stay will cover the main attractions.

Corfu and Zante being on the west part of Greece are also big enough to spend more than a week but you have to take into consideration the travel to get there.

If you are coming for the first time in to Greece, a substantial stay in Athens is a must. At least 3-4 days will just cover the essentials.

Then if you interests are also historical Olympia and Delphi are also a must.

do lesbians come from Lesbos?

admin on May-31-2011

you know…..the island in Greece?

The ancient poet Sappho used to live in Lesbos. Her poetry centers on passion and love for various personages and both genders. There are rumors about her having lesbian relationships with several of her female students, like Atthis, Telesippa and Megara. Since the 19th century the words Lesbian and Sapphic have been used to describe homosexual relatioships between women.

Last question about Greek men ?

admin on Oct-31-2010

Why do so many gay men believe Greek men to be gay ? Okay here’s the deal :

I saw the movie ” 300 ” in 2007 … while I was in a forum it was being circulated by gay men , neo cons and others that Greek men are gay , Ancient Greeks practiced homosexuality and that the 300 Spartans were gay lovers … that the word Lesbian came from the Greek Island of ” Lesbos ” because they believed Sapho to be a Lesbian ( ? )

I went on YouTube and typed ” Sexy Greek men ” … there were videos all over of ” GayEros ” and whichever

I thought Greek men were hot so I was sadden that perhaps they were gay and so I gave up

Fast forward one year later in 2008 and I got an email from a friend of mine … so there were a lot of gay groups in Greece with ” fag hags ” and the ” fag hags ” got more attention from Greek men than the gay guys themselves ???

I thought this was all a joke and ignored it for a while … then I decided to go to Greece … the amount of straight/hetero men in Greece was SHOCKING … oh my gosh it seems like I was lied to

Then I got another message that the 300 Spartans were not gay lovers … they mistaken them for the 300 Sacred Band of Thebes

Then I learned that not all Greek states were the same … some in Ancient Greece were purely homosexual , some mostly , others partial , some mostly straight/hetero and others purely straight/hetero

Usually in some states in homosexuality in Ancient Greece ( gosh I phrased that SO wrong LMAO but who cares … ) first they got married and then started to have homosexual relations … I found this was the other way around in Sparta and other Greek states … they started at 7 or 10 ? Through 20 ( where they got married and impregnanted the women ) and at 30 they would finally see their wives faces ( and since there were sons or daughters ” offspring ” would not be as important I think )

Here is something about sexual stereotypes about Greek men — > http://www.netfunny.com/rhf/jokes/98/Dec/islands.html

It goes like this ” The 2 Greek men are sleeping with each other and the Greek woman is cleaning and cooking for them ”

I LOLed at that ( gosh it seems I can’t write today proparly lol !!! )
Sadly right now I knew how wrong I was

But I still don’t get it … why do so many gay guys believe that most Greek men to be gay ?

Quick answer – ignorance and stereotypes are the base of these people who believe that most Greek guys are gay.

Sex and relationships between men have historically been different to how they are today, and in ancient Greece sex between the same sex seemed to have been a fairly traditional part of life – as varied as you state. Gay life varies today around the world, some countries kill gay people just for being who they are, whereas there is a growing acceptance of equality now in many places of the world.

There’s still homophobia, in its more recent meaning of the word, rather than that coined by Psychologists where it meant a fear. Such prejudice influences people to believe untruths and to distort their perception of others, as well as the past.

In summary, men in Greece are likely to have the typical sexual orientations that people around the world have, they are homo sapiens after all. The media often distorts things too, and this also influences perception.

But prejudice and bigotry still remain in the narrow minds of many. It’s great that you’ve been to Greece and explored more of the reality.

Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob

Greek bouncer jailed over Aussie’s death?

admin on Oct-29-2010

A Greek nightclub bouncer has been jailed for 22 and a half years over the death of Australian tourist Doujon Zammit.
Marios Antonopoulos, 25, was on Thursday found guilty of inflicting wounds that caused the 20-year-old Sydney man’s death in a violent street attack on the holiday island of Mykonos in July 2008.
Two other men involved in the attack were also jailed for more than seven and eight years each.
All three men were found guilty after having their original charges of murder and attempted murder downgraded by a panel of judges and jurors following a trial on the island of Lesbos.

Fair enough, justice was served.
But to what reason are those sentences so harsh?
Is it serving the politics or the courts in Greece are so tough?

Basic rights and the freedom to live was this man’s entitlement.
He has been denied that. Someone has lost a son, a brother…
So, no way was the sentence harsh, on the contrary it should have more.

"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. ”

The above quote does not include murder.

Why do so many people hate Greeks?

admin on Oct-28-2010

Seriously. They act like their nationalitiy is the best, when they dont know anything about their culture, like the Greeks do. They make fun of their culture, cluelessly. Most Italians act like their the best, when they dont know anything about being Italian, and make fun of the Greeks in various ways. Most Hispanics act like they’re so cool, and they’re the best, while always disrespecting Greeks and showing no class. Turks always think that Greeks are gay and always say f*ck Greece, when certain groups like Jews, Armenians, Russians, Bulgarians, Kurds and Romanians who know their culture know that greece is right. White trash always make fun of Greek music, when at least they are smart enough to not do drugs and are very successful in recent Eurovision’s. Americans think that Greeks always complain about names like"Lesbos" and "Macedonia", when they should just be happy with everything that Greeks have done to improve the world. Many elderly Americans think that all Greeks do is party, when all we are trying to do is have fun and unlike Americans aged 15-25, they are not hicks that work in a farm and smoke pot. Why so they always think negative of Greece? *This does not count for people of the Artmenian, Jewish, Russian, Serbian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Korean, Chinese, and Kurdish disaporas who know what they are talking about. Also, does not count for French people, as they too help out Greece, and people always call them mean.

Some of the opinions you think Americans hold about Greeks are nothing I’ve ever heard. Why do you think we would feel this way about Greeks? Anyway, people will always have pride for themselves and their countries and if they’re too ignorant to back-up why they are so great they resort to putting others down to feel better about themselves (Americans get this a lot). I have met many Greeks throughout college and grad school. Most are great, warm people with a good sense of humor. A few (not majority) are snobbish, but that can apply to any group of people from any country. Everybody gets a turn being the victim of someones ignorant stereotypical BS.

Court rules lesbians are not just from Lesbos

ATHENS (Reuters) – A Greek court has dismissed a request by residents of the Aegean island of Lesbos to ban the use of the word lesbian to describe gay women, according to a court ruling made public on Tuesday.

Three residents of Lesbos, the birthplace of the ancient Greek poetess Sappho whose love poems inspired the term lesbian, brought a case last month arguing the use of the term in reference to gay women insulted their identity.

In a July 18 decision, the Athens court said the word did not define the identity of the residents of the island, and so it could be validly used by gay groups in Greece and abroad.

The ruling ordered the plaintiffs to pay court expenses of 230 euros.

"This is a good decision for lesbians everywhere," Vassilis Chirdaris

Last answer to BS.

They are no more gay than the average population. Then or now.

Notwithstanding all those movies and clueless dolts who post nonsense on the internet.

Is it true that in Mycono island there’s a perception only of 2% STRAIGHT MEN?

admin on Oct-24-2010

And what about LESBOS i heard that there’s a perception only of 1% of straight women who lives under discrimination!!!!! :-|
I myself i am greek but unfortunately (or maybe fortunately :-| )
i have more than 4 years to visit Greece.
So anybody can give info?
Well as far as i remember it is i don’t know about now though……….

By definition everybody who lives on Lesbos is a Lesbian, male or female, straight or gay. In this instance Lesbian means someone who lives on Lesbos, as much as I would prefer it the other way
