Is Santorini and Thera the same place?

admin on Jan-28-2012

I know they’re both part of the Cyclades in Greece, but are there locations different or are they the same place with different names?

They are the same. Two different names for the same place.

Santorini was named by the Latin Empire in the thirteenth century, and is a reference to Saint Irene, from the name of the old cathedal in the village of Perissa.

{Before then, it was known as Kallístē (Καλλίστη, "the most beautiful one"), Strongýlē (Greek: Στρογγύλη, "the circular one"), or THERA.} The name Thera was revived in the nineteenth century as the official name of the island and its main city, but the colloquial name Santorini is still in popular use.

In fact, I think that tourists know the island only by the name Santorini.

What do I need to know when traveling to Greece?

admin on Jan-22-2012

I want to go on vacation to Greece from the United States. What city would you recommend I stay in, what sights are there to see, preferably in drive-able or walk-able distances from each other?
I’ve always wanted to go because from pictures it looks beautiful in certain spots.
What specifically should I know, as far as money, languages, etc.
Where is this? What is it called? Would I be able to go to it and stand on those stairs? http://www.citypictures.org/r-europe-148-greece-226-thalassini-church-cyclades-islands-greece-2810.htm

I realize this is a very packed question, but I definitely could use some help. :)

Would you recommend going to Greece?

Thankssomuch.
Victoria.
:)

In the limited time you will have for your vacation the best you can do is to spend a few days in Athens and the travel to Santorini and possibly to Crete.

Why do I feel so addicted to the movie "Summer Lovers"?

admin on Jun-5-2011

I put this movie on for wallpaper when nothing else is on. I’ve got the region 1 version, the region 0(Chinese release), 2 Soundtrack LP’s(one still sealed in shrink wrap), the cassette version, two 45rpm 7" records of the song "Summer Lovers" by Michael Sembello, three sets of lobby cards(one set is from Spain and is different from the other two) I’ve got 2 Australian Daybills(posters), black & white and color publicity stills, the american movie poster in different sizes and other stuff related to the movie. I even went to extreme of assembling all the rest of the music from the film that’s not included in the LP, and had a professional recording studio record the music in chronological order for a complete Soundtrack so I can listen to the music and "see" the movie in my head.

This movie is my trip to (Santorini) Greece that I never had. The un-credited star of the movie is Greece itself. Breath-taking photography of Greek ruins and the Cyclades islands, and a fair amount of skin, make this a movie I just never tire of. This is a "little" movie and in spots painfully bad, yet I just can’t get enough of the characters brought to life by Peter Gallagher, Daryl Hannah, and poor dead Valerie Quennessen. This flick is 29 years old, so please reserve comment unless you’ve seen it.

I don’t feel this way about any other movie, and I’ve never collected paraphenalia related to a movie before.

So I’m asking the Y/A community: What is it about this flick that makes me watch it repeatedly(I’ve seen it hundreds of times)and collect every scrap of ephemera I can find? What are your thoughts?

Because you enjoy it..

Greece – Ancient Belief?

admin on Mar-20-2011

Many structures, doors, windowsills and church domes are painted kyanos, especially in the cyclades islands. Why did people believe that this particular colour would keep evil at bay?

IT is a simple process..sandra….the idea was that the cayan colour, was associated with light…meaning LIFE..

and life was god……and his word..

any thing darker in colour or even red..as red meant ..WAR.. AND THE FORMER DEATH..an association with the devil…(that’s me)…lol

EVEN the ancient building codes of a simply athenian house had an antrim..where the light would come in to the house and more importaly the gods blessed the house ..being in contact with them in direct light…

DONT FORGET THE NAME ..ELINNAS..comes from two words…. light and stone…….stone being the word used by the ancient greeks for metroite..as they belived gods traveleld on those.and left a trail of light.. and the ancient greeks as you see in ancient mythology ..associate them selfs as direct ,,decedents of the gods… hence the word …..ELINAS..

What are some Mediterranean/Greek Isle decorating ideas?

admin on Aug-25-2010

Earlier this year, I got to spend some time in Greece. And I fell in love with the country. The landscape is absolutely awe-inspiring and beautiful. Also, I have been a big fan of the design elements that I think typifies Greek design.

In the near future, I will be moving into a new bedroom, and I will have the chance to separate myself from the decor that was decorated for me when I was 8 years old. Since, I was inspired by Greece so much, I would love to bring that feeling into my room. These are the ideas I have thus far. Feel free to judge them as well as submitting new ideas.

http://www.boatbookings.com/images/greece/greece_dome600.jpg

My first idea is to pain all of the walls a very pure and stark white, then proceed to paint the ceiling, doors, and trim a shade of blue similar to the picture above. The room has hardwood floors, so I plan on sanding them down and refinishing them. That’s the basic canvas.

One thing that I really appreciate about Greek design is that way powerful colors are pared with the large amounts of white, which makes a powerful statement and shows off the colors beautifully. This is important to me because I have a small collection of colored glass that I would like to display in my room. Painting white walls would provide a inclusive backdrop for the different colors of glassware I have.

At first, I wanted to incorporate my favorite color, orange, as a accent wall color, but I do not think it will fit in with the Greek look I’m going for or match well with the blue. Also, it would compete with the colors I want to bring in with the glassware, fabric, accessories, etc.

My last major decision is to whether I should go with bright, vivid colors, which seem to be more reminiscent of the Greek Isles, or go with more natural, earth tones color scheme. Both would incorporate an eclectic color scheme, I just do not know if it is more becoming for a young adult to have vivid colors or more naturally occurring shades of the same colors.

So, do you have any ideas and suggestion about different elements I could incorporate in the room? What do you think of my initial plan?
