“Thessaloniki gave us a wonderful opportunity to sample some great Greek cuisine. We had dinner one night at Molyvos, an upscale eatery popular among the up-and-comers of this glitzy city. (Yes, we were underdressed.) The meal consisted of medzes (like Spanish tapas) with palate-cleansing splashes of ouzo between bites. Our menus paid apt, if grossly awkward, tribute to this anise-flavoured drink with the following:

“The solemnity of ouzo is connected to satiety of hunger, as much as having sex with the child bearing.”

Hmm… okay, well, let’s have another. This delicious spirit punctuated tastes of:

Delightful dolmades – marinated grape leaves stuffed with herbed rice;
Juicy fried mushrooms with basil and white wine;
Mouthwatering keftedes – meatballs with minced lamb, spices, and onions;
Scrumptious smoked swordfish;
Wonderfully salty marinated olives;
Tender kalamari;
and a simple, fresh Greek salad chock full of tomatoes and cucumbers.

Of course, in Greece, where over 40% of the population smokes, there is no such thing as a non-smoking section. Our beautiful meal was slightly marred by the haze in the room. A few times that evening we actually saw a waiter bussing ashtrays. That’s right. If you had managed to fill up your ashtray with cigarette butts during the course of your meal, you wouldn’t have to sit and look at them; rest assured that a fresh, empty tray would be provided for you to fill up again.”

“Arrived in Rodos (Rhodes) at 8 in the morning just missing our connecting ferry to Turkey. We now had 7 hours to kill in Rhodes Town on Rodos. The ferry ride to Rodos was smooth sailing. Daniel and I splurged on a shared cabin since I wasn’t feeling well and 15 hours on a deck chair just wasn’t appealing to us. With my computer and his Ipod we watched movies till we passed out for a good nights rest. The next day we knew was going to be exhausting figuring out where in Turkey we were going and how to get there. I’m really getting used to Daniels motto “On the Fly.”

Now that we had 7 hours to kill we had plenty of time to wander the streets of old Rhodes and see this medieval town. Leaving our bags at the port I found the entrance through the fortress walls of Old Rhodes. Being so early in the morning the streets were almost bare. All around there were remains of old churches, towers, castle walls, and a maze of streets with walls at least 12 ft tall. As we walked through the maze we found the main street and at first glance new it was going to be a hellish tourist trap when everyone woke up. Stalls, stores, cafes, and restaurants lined every corner of the street with the shop owners busily getting ready for the tourists. Every turn we made was the same and with the time drifting toward noon the streets became crowded with hordes of people. All I wanted to do was get out of this mayhem.

Ever so slowly the time came to board the ferry to Turkey. After port taxes, visa lines, and passport check points, we boarded the ferry to Marmaris, Turkey and settled in for a relaxing hour boat ride out of Greece. Getting excited, but not sure where we were going, Daniel and I borrowed someone’s guidebook and made a feverish attempt to figure out our route through Turkey. Both of us were in agreement that the underground cities in Capiddocia were not to miss and of course Istanbul. Having seen most of the ruins in Greece and the city of Pompeii in Italy, I felt the ruins in Ephesus could be missed. Wanting to see more remote areas of Turkey, we picked a location on the map to head for that night. That small town on the southern coast of Turkey was Fethiye. Little did we know it had so much to offer and would make a dream of mine come true.”

I am going into the army next month officially, and I want to know what type of MOS or what one has to have in order to get shipped someone like Greece.

What an MOS is?

Anyhow, just make sure that if and when you come here, you do not act like the rest of the US military staff: get routinely pissed drunk, create a havoc, and because the police cannot really arrest them, they just take them in a back alley beat the living hell out of them before they dump them in the gate of the base, and none the wiser…

I was wondering what part of modern government does the ancient greece council resemble. Would it be the senate or the house of representatives?? what about the assembly?? are they like the senate or the house of representatives??

First of all, I’m assuming that by "ancient Greece council and assembly", you are referring to the Athenian democracy. If you mean something else, please specify.

This is open to interpretation, but I’d say the Council of 500 (Boule) is like the US House of Representatives. They have/had the power to draft legislation and send it to another group to approve. That other group is the Popular Assembly (Ecclesia) in Athens, and the Senate in the US. These groups vote on legislation that was proposed to them by the lower house.

One big difference is that the US Senate can also draft laws and pass them down to the House of Representatives, whereas I don’t think the Ecclesia could draft new laws. But close enough.
