Recommendations for Family Holidays to Greece?

admin on May-31-2010

Hi,
i have a 16 year old daughter and 13 and 9 year old sons
whenever we go away our daughter always wants to be near other teenagers and our sons just want to be near the sea/pool
my husband and i love the cycladic architecture and we know that this is going to be found in the cyclades obviously.
Is there an island that is relatively relaxed, beautiful but with say a large hotel ?
thanks

I think you will enjoy aa holiday on Paros and/or Naxos. They are close by and easy to combine.
PAros has two main towns, Paroikia(the port), more clubs, bars etc., but also Naoussa, more picturesque, but has many hotels and teenagers. Great beaches too.
NAxos, if you stay at Plaka, has many restaurants, little bars, cafes etc., with teenagers, and small hotels with pools, and the sea is nearby. Naxos has the best beaches! And it is very interesting because it also has a lot of cultural heritage you can visit, horse riding to do, and more.
I think you will enjoy these islands!
Email me or ask over here for more info!

History of Greece How much was the truth in the fall of Troy and how did Homer add to the story?

admin on May-31-2010

We know from other writers of the time that Troy did exist. The actual cause of the war was the desire of the Greeks to control Troy’s territory. the characters also existed but what is a bit uncertain is the wooden horse part. It is not sure if this actually existed or whether Homer ws speaking metaphorically meaning somthing else.

Thinking of Holiday in Kos (greece) in Sept What will weather & ow busy will it be?

admin on May-31-2010

We are looking at going to Kos late Sept this year. What weather should we expect and does everything close down or will it still be open. Where is a good place to stay? 4 of us Will be taking 2 kids under 1. So still looking for a little night life.

yeah still hot .. try going for hotel rather than apt. as large hotels will cater for young kids .. play groups so on .. even if they are too young to take part its still nice for them to see other kids ..
entertainment on everynight .
also you can get child bleep’rs .. one on your wrist one on the kiddy’s.
i have a 6 year old son. and set the range for 20ft he strays outside that and i am alerted. he also has a army style name tag with my number on it..
keep one eye on them at all times as safe as greece is dont be the next mcann.. happy holiday

Do Greeks generally welcome foreigners buying vacation homes in Greece?

admin on May-31-2010

I have read about Greeks being displeased with immigrants in their country but would they react the same way against foreign holiday home-owners? I’m Asian and consider buying a holiday home in one of the Cycladic islands.
Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. I’ll put this to vote.

I ll be honest

we are little sensitive on this matter

you know how much we like foreigners and how friendly we are

but when it comes to houses and land, we are little more conservative

we dont salute the idea much

sorry but its the truth

and I think you ask for the truth, right?

Regards

Why was the polis in ancient greece so important?

admin on May-31-2010

I don’t know much about ancient greece, but why was the polis so important to them? like democracy and stuff?

A polis is a political entity ruled by its body of citizens. The polis in archaic Greece means city, and is important because it came to describe the entire body of citizens. The ancient Greeks didn’t refer to Athens, Sparta, Thebes and other poleis as such; they rather spoke of the Athenians, Lacedaemonians, Thebans and so on. The body of citizens came to be the most important meaning of the term polis in ancient Greece. It is important because it symbolized self-governance under their own selected ruler and king. The political life of the classical era is transformed to an individualized religious and philosophical view of life.
